Design of Reconfigurable Intelligent Surface-Aided Cross-Media Communications

A novel reconfigurable intelligent surface (RIS)-aided hybrid reflection/transmitter design is proposed for achieving information exchange in cross-media communications. In pursuit of the balance between energy efficiency and low-cost implementations, cloud-management transmission protocol adopted integrated multi-media system. Specifically, messages devices using heterogeneous propagation media, are firstly transmitted to medium-matched AP, with aid RIS-based dual-hop transmission. After operation intermediate frequency conversion, access point (AP) uploads received signals cloud further demodulating decoding process. Based on time division multiple (TDMA), able distinguish downlink data different transforms them into input RIS controller via dedicated control channel. Thereby, can passively reflect incident carrier back original receiver exchanged during preallocated slots, following idea an index modulation-based transmitter. Moreover, iterative optimization algorithm utilized optimizing phase, transmit rate allocation jointly delay-constrained communication model. Our simulation results demonstrate that scheme improve end-to-end throughput than AP-based transmission, equal allocation, random discrete phase adjustment benchmarks.
